Nokia, during the pre-data era of 2007-2011, was renowned for producing some of the most iconic mobile handsets such as the Nokia 3300. However, this popularity also led to the rise of counterfeit manufacturers, particularly in China, that produced fake Nokia phones.
Our team came up with an innovative solution to address this problem by verifying the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of genuine Nokia phones through SMS text messaging. We integrated this solution with IMEI inventories at Nokia’s Asian Head office, allowing users in various countries to verify the authenticity of their Nokia phones by simply sending a text message to a shortcode we established as “NOKIA” (66542).
We then had this shortcode printed on all Nokia phone packaging, making it easy for customers to verify the authenticity of their Nokia devices. This solution was successfully deployed in several countries, including Nigeria, UAE, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.
The impact of our solution was significant, as it resulted in a multi-fold reduction in the number of counterfeit Nokia phones in circulation. This solution ran successfully for four years, contributing to the enhanced reputation of Nokia as a trusted brand and increasing customer loyalty.
Throughout the project, our team worked closely with Nokia to ensure that our solution was effective, efficient, and scalable. We provided regular updates and reports, allowing Nokia to monitor the progress of the project and make necessary adjustments.
Overall, our solution for verifying the authenticity of Nokia phones through SMS text messaging was a tremendous success, contributing to the reduction of counterfeit products and boosting the brand’s reputation.
